The Major Name is "Food Safety," and the Major Code is "4914"
Please note that there are different requirements for domestic and international applications.
Original, official transcripts, letters of recommendation and professional letter of intent should be sent directly to:
Peggy Trommater
Administrative Assistant
Online Master of Science in Food Safety
B 51 Food Safety Building
East Lansing, MI 48824-1302
mailto:info@online.foodsafety.msu.edu
To avoid filled classes, we recommended that you apply as early as possible. Applications, including all transcripts and required documents, must be received no later than the following deadlines:
The applicant must have completed a bachelor’s degree, professional degree, or equivalent degree from an accredited and recognized college or university.
The applicant must have completed at least six credits of college-level biological sciences, three of which are in microbiology.
Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 system, submit a professional letter of intent, and two letters of recommendation (three for international applicants).
The applicant must also have proven or demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English.
Experience in the workplace with food safety as a component is heavily weighed in meeting requirements for admissions.
Applicants not possessing all of the requirements may be admitted to the program provisionally and be permitted to make up deficiencies based upon review and approval of the program director and program curriculum committee.
International applicants should apply early to allow sufficient time to meet all requirements.
Use the international application, and supply all additional documentation as required by the MSU Office of Admissions. This can include, but is not limited to:
Original transcripts from ALL schools attended.
Original degree granting diploma, or transcript with degree conferred date and major.
English translation of all non-English Official Transcripts
Original copy of English Language Proficiency Scores (i.e. TOEFL).
Specific detail on international requirements can be found on the 2009-2010 Domestic and International Application for Graduate Study. You may download or print this document from the following link: http://grad.msu.edu/apply/docs/international.pdf .
(Note: Online Students do not need to submit the Statement of Financial Proof.)
Apply early. Acceptance into a degree program does not guarantee admittance to Michigan State University. All admission requirements must be met and approved by the MSU Office of Admissions before an accepted applicant may enroll in classes.
Apply online. An online application is immediately accessible by program personnel, and automatically becomes part of the MSU student database. This means faster processing.
Pay the application fee. If you have not paid the application fee, you have not officially applied to MSU.
Transcripts and letters of recommendation must come to the program office directly from their source, not the applicant. Letters of recommendation must include the source’s contact information.
Become familiar with the MSU Home Page (http://www.msu.edu). Information and resources are only a click away (begin with the "Future Students" tab).

Anyone with at least a Bachelor's degree can apply to MSU as a graduate level Lifelong student and take any of our online courses individually and separate from the degree program.
Alternatively, we offer a Certificate in Food Safety for those Lifelong students who successfully complete any 4 of the program's qualifying graduate courses. If you are admitted to the MS in Food Safety degree program at a later date, up to 9 Lifelong credits can be transferred to graduate level. Learn more at: http://www.online.foodsafety.msu.edu/content/certificate.php.
Note: Lifelong students must arrange an "override" prior to enrolling in graduate courses. Contact Peggy Trommater at info@online.foodsafety.msu.edu for more information.
