A faculty member in the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Paul’s research expertise includes epidemiology, veterinary preventive medicine, food safety, antimicrobial resistance, dairy management, corporate and government veterinary practice, and veterinary public health. Paul is a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. He obtained a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, 1991; D.V.M., University of Missouri, 1979; M.P.H., University of Minnesota, 1978, and a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, 1974.
James Bradford
As a member of the Swine and Poultry Leadership Team at Pfizer Animal Health Jim’s responsibilities include identifying sustainable uses for approved products and potential products, food safety initiatives in swine and poultry, antimicrobial resistance issues, and support to a number of strategic teams within Pfizer’s animal sciences and product development units. (Swine Veterinary Services, New Product Marketing, Business Development, Veterinary Medicine Research and Development, Antibiotics and Hormone Team and the Outreach Team.) Jim also serves on the Pharmaceutical Issues Committee of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, and chairs the Pharmaceutical Committee of the U.S. Animal Health Association. He received his D.V.M. from Michigan State University in 1972 and an M.S. in Food Safety in December of 2007.
Susan Ewart
The Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University, Susan is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of allergic and airway diseases in animals and humans. Her laboratory investigates the mechanisms underlying non-inflammatory as well as allergen-induced airway hyper responsiveness (AHR) in mice. In addition, her laboratory studies a whole population birth cohort from the Isle of Wight, U.K. that has been fully characterized for allergic diseases and indices at multiple time points through 10 years of age. She is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and holds memberships in the American Thoracic Society and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Susan received a B.S. in Veterinary Medicine and D.V.M. from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Physiology from Johns Hopkins University.
Joanne Givens
As the Director of the Detroit District Office for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Joanne leads approximately 100 federal employees in administrative, compliance, domestic and import investigative, and laboratory positions in Michigan and Indiana. Prior to her appointment to this role in August 2001, Joanne directed the FDA’s Investigations Branch in the New Jersey District Office. She has held a number of positions over her 30 years with the FDA. Joanne’s committee appointments include serving as the chair of a National Field/Headquarters Committee, co-chair to the Great Lakes Health Border Initiative Food Defense Subcommittee, and vice-chair of the Detroit Federal Executive Board.
Karen Klomparens
Since 1997, Karen has served as Dean of Michigan State University’s Graduate School and Associate Provost for graduate education. She is a Professor of Plant Biology and is on leave as Director of MSU’s Center for Advanced Microscopy. With her graduate students, Karen published 60 peer-reviewed articles on the topic of ultrastructural development of sporulating structures in fungiand three books on electron microscopy in the biological sciences. She and her colleagues developed a FIPSE (U.S. Department of Education) and Hewlett Foundation-supported program on “Setting Expectations and Resolving Conflicts in Graduate Education” that is the topic of a 2008 Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) monograph. Karen served a two-year term as the chair of the Big Ten (CIC) graduate deans group and serves on theExecutive Committee and Board of Directors for the Council of Graduate Schools, the Executive Committee of the Association of Graduate Schools (AAU), and was a member of the GRE (Graduate Records Examinations) board. Karen received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University.
Edward Mather
A Michigan State University Professor Emeritus since 2008, Ed served as Director of the Online Master of Science in Food Safety Degree Program at Michigan State University (MSU). He was also acting director of MSU’s National Food Safety & Toxicology Center and led the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-funded National Center for Food Protection and Defense National Education Program . His experience includes working as a food animal veterinarian, teacher, researcher and administrator, as well as providing food safety leadership at local, national and international levels. Ed has served on numerous national boards and was appointed as an international expert by the International Atomic Energy Agency and United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization. Retired from MSU, Ed serves as a consultant and providing his expertise in food safety and food defense. He serves on advisory boards for the International Association of Food Protection and NSF-International, Ann Arbor, MI.
Mark Moorman
Mark is the Senior Director of Food Safety & Food Chemistry for the Kellogg Company in Battle Creek, Michigan. He oversees the safety of the global portfolio of Kellogg products. Prior to joining the Kellogg Company in 1998, Mark spent 10 years with Silliker Laboratories as the technical director of microbiology. In that role, he was responsible for assisting clients with microbiological food safety and quality issues. Mark received his undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University in microbiology and food science.
John J.H. (Joe) Schwarz
Joe is a practicing otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon in Battle Creek, Michigan, and a lecturer in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Formerly the mayor of Battle Creek, a U.S. State Senator and a member of the U.S. Congress, Joe was also a member of the Governor’s Emergency Financial Advisory Panel in 2007. He has also served as a member of the Independent Review Group appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Defense to investigate practices at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2007, and chaired the panel formed by Detroit Renaissance and the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce to evaluate health care in Southeastern Michigan. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan and his Medical Degree from Wayne State University. He received his medical residency training at Harvard. From 1965 through 1970, Joe served in the U.S. Navy and with the CIA in Southeast Asia. In 2008, he was chair of CureMichigan -- an organization supporting the legalization of embryonic stem cell research in Michigan.
Timothy Stevenson
A U.S. Military Colonel currently on assignment as deputy director of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Veterinary Services Activity, Tim works in Falls Church, Virginia. From 2001to 2004, he served as the commander of the Veterinary Laboratory in Europe. From 2004 to 2007, Tim served as commander of the Southern Europe Veterinary Detachment in Vicenza, Italy. Tim has also served as the deputy director at the DOD Veterinary Laboratory at Fort Sam Houston, where he helped the lab to achieve accreditation for the first time. Prior to joining the DOD, Tim served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps and has worked as a private practitioner. Tim received a D.V.M. and a Ph.D. in Food Microbiology from Texas A&M University.
Frank Yiannas
As the vice president of food safety for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Frank oversees food safety and other public health functions for the world's largest food retailer. His purview includes Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Club, is responsible for the training and education of employees and food product suppliers, and directs regulatory compliance efforts. Prior to joining Wal-Mart in 2008, Frank was the Director of Safety & Health for the Walt Disney World Company for 19 years. Frank is a past president of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) and the current chair of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network’s Board of Directors. A registered microbiologist with the American Academy of Microbiology, Franks is a member of several professional associations, including the National Environmental Health Association, the American Society of Microbiology, and the Institute of Food Technologists. He is the author of the book “Food Safety Culture, Creating a Behavior-based Food Safety Management System” soon to be released by Springer Scientific. Frank received a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Central Florida and an M.P.H. from the University of South Florida.
